VillageTown Example.jpg

According to certain experts [1] [2], a city works best if everything people needs for their daily chores are within 10 minutes walk. A city with 10.000 people has to be divided into smaller villages where every village contains all basic shops and other daily necessities (school, doctor, pharmacy). In this design the city is divided into 20 villages with a central theater. Clause Lewenz also remarks that the upper limit for a village is 10.000 inhabitants. Above that, government and bureaucracy becomes increasingly difficult. So a hard limit, a physical wall around the city itself, is needed. If there are more than 10.000 people, they will have to move to a new city.

According to the aforementioned experts, people in general feel happier in an old style village. This means smaller streets so cars can't come into the village itself. This means carefree walking and children can safely play outside. Cars stay at the edge of the village, but small electric cars for the less mobile and for goods transportation can be allowed. And with a bicycle all other areas are easily reachable. Also, defining spaces using curved roads and squares as defined in [New Urbanism].
